Business Booming? It Is Trying

2012 was not necessarily a breakout year for the US economy, but certainly was not the financial disaster that was 2008, 2009, 2010, or 2011.

It is still too early to tell how the past year will look on paper, but consumer confidence is up and workers seem to be happy. Q4 looks is an annual "make or break" quarter, but if seasonal hiring is any indicator, Q4 will present some positive numbers.

Again, no one expects 2012 to be a record-breaking fiscal triumph, but little steps are what we need to slowly re-instill confidence and trust into the American market, as well as world markets.

Aspects of the market to watch for come January:

• Electronics
• Automotive
• Retail
• Insurance (Non-medical)
• Property Management
• Financial Institutions

A Brief History of PCB Automation

Automation is all around us these days, especially in the manufacturing industry where many of our modern goods are made. Shows like "How it's made" showcase these gargantuan workhorse machines in all their glory, and the average person is well aware of the robotics' existence. But how did these machines come into being?

It all started a century ago with the advent of the auto industry. Ford was the first automaker to utilize the assembly line, a new idea in manufacturing that took sometimes hundreds of people and tasked each of them with their own simple small task to perform. All of these many men doing their own little piece of a greater work provided a more efficient workflow.

As technology grew, the men were soon replaced by machines to take over these small specific tasks, these robotic machines have their own brains called PCBs. A PCB assembly is really just a microchip that is programmed to perform the task indefinitely, at an extremely quick rate, and with little to no chance of error. Unlike the microprocessors that are used in home computers -- and are created to perform thousands of tasks -- a prototype PCB is created to only know how to perform its one specific task over and over again.

PCB manufacturing companies that create these "brains" are in high demand these days, as the people that create a PCB must be knowledgeable in both engineering and computer programming. Best Proto is one such company that takes an obsolete process of either manufacturing or packaging, and then builds PCBs that power a newly automated process.

It is quite interesting to see how so many manufacturing processes have become automated over the years and how now our goods and services can be made at a blurring rate, and with relative ease. It is more interesting when you realize that the entire automation idea was originally created to give a single worker a mindless, simple task to complete over and over again, and today we have handed those tasks over to microprocessors and metal.

The Last Great Online Xmas Shopping Xperience

Well, it has officially been announced that this year will be the final year that Christmas shoppers will be able to make purchases from Amazon.com without having to pay a sales tax.

Since its inception as an online retailer, Amazon has been a shopping site with one price and no additional tax. Sure, shipping and handling could sometimes be added -- depending on the purchase -- changing the official prices, but starting next spring, a sales tax will also be leveraged.

Details are still sketchy on how exactly the sales tax will be placed on items, there is no word on whether the sales tax will be a flat rate, or if the applicable taxes will be categorized as State or Federal taxes. All we know is that a tax is imminent.

While this news may disappoint die-hard year-round Amazon shoppers, there is some good news that comes out of it: the tax won't be added until sometime next spring. That means that we have one last Christmas shopping season to buy up Amazon products and not incur additional sales tax.

The decision to add sales tax to the items from Amazon came after the company was hit with a 53 million dollar tax lien for unpaid taxes in prior years. Amazon saw that there was no way they could avoid having to pay the taxes, no matter how they set up their tax paperwork.

This is not necessarily a sting to Amazon's finances, however. This holiday season could be one of Amazon's biggest sales seasons yet, giving it a strong end-of-year showing and upping their annual revenue. Not only will shoppers be eager to buy up tax-free Christmas gifts for one last time, but this is on top of a slowly improving economy that expects to see high fourth quarter sales in all retail sectors.

So remember, this Christmas will be your last chance to save a few cents or even dollars on each and every product you purchase. The best part is, you don't even have to wake up early, stand out in the cold, or get trampled by rival bargain-shoppers.

Happy Holidays everyone -- from BIZ.SERVZ
